You are what you eat, so eat smart!
MyFi Dallas is not a way to get fit or lose weight over night. It’s a way to learning how to make healthy food choices and practice healthy fitness habits one day at a time! Here are five quick and simple ways
you can make healthy food choices:
1. Start with Fruits & Veggies
Every body needs five servings—or ½ to 1 cup—of fruits and veggies each day to function optimally. Grab an apple on the way to school or eat a salad for lunch. Challenge yourself by creating a meal that is ¾ fruits or vegetables and eat those first! And try one of our yummy recipes, like Not-So-Boring Broccoli or the Bean and Vegetable Enchilada Casserole.
2. Drink Loads of Water
Because you're moving more, you're likely sweating more. You’ll need to replenish your liquids to stay hydrated. The best way to do that is to drink water—lots and lots of water! The more water you drink, the better you’ll feel. You can also mix in 100% juice drinks or fat-free milk too. But steer clear of sodas and sugary drinks—yuck!
3. Remember Portion Control
Eat small portions—no need to super-size your food. It’s not just what you eat, but how much you eat. Moderation is key, so have a little of everything instead of clearing your plate.
4. Be a Smart Snacker
Snacks are where it’s at! Eating small, healthy snacks throughout the day keeps your body from getting too hungry. When we get too hungry, we reach for what’s easiest, but not always healthiest, to eat. Try a trail mix or a popsicle made of 100% fruit juice. Better yet, try our Veggies & Dip or our Peanut Butter & Apple Snacker recipes. Yum!
5. Be Your own Chef
The easiest way to eat smart is to get involved in making meals for you and your family. Put together a grocery list of healthy ingredients and then help do the grocery shopping. You might include items like whole wheat bread, low-fat cheese, peanut butter, fruits, veggies and unsalted nuts. Then, with the help of a parent or guardian, put the ingredients together to make a great, healthy meal.
